How to Wear '80s Trends Now
Wednesday, October 07, 2009
One of the best ways to make your own personal style a little more unique is by incorporating modern pieces that are re-makes of past styles. Right now, the '80s are making a comeback. Although not everything from that decade is worth wearing again, there are a few items that do deserve a second chance to be a part of your wardrobe.

1.Shoulder Pads

Most people shudder when they think of the huge, blocky sewn-in shoulder pads that were found in almost every '80s suit, dress or blouse; understandable. On the other hand, the great appeal of shoulder pads is that they do create an empowering silhouette by broadening the shoulders and giving the illusion of a smaller waist. By adding a tailored suit-jacket or dress in a simple colour with structured shoulders you can include the best part of '80s shoulder pads in your wardrobe. Like this:

2.Neon

The first reaction to most '80s neon clothing is to squint. The sheer retina-burning quality of neon colours is what gives them a bad reputation. The silver-lining (neon-lining?) however, is that the blinding quality of a piece of neon clothing also gives it a show-stopping edge. The key is to add just the perfect amount of neon to your outfit; in other words-accessories. A hot pink pair of pumps, a bright clutch or a thick neon bracelet will spice up a simple outfit with minimal effort. Here are some examples:

3.Bodysuits, Leg-Warmers and Leggings

Flashdance. That pretty much sums up what comes to mind when '80s exercise or dance gear is mentioned.  While not all of us are jazz dancers or take part in daily aerobics classes, we can all take advantage of the benefits of '80s dance and exercise attire. It's comfortable, versatile and can be slimming-here is how; don't make your '80s exercise gear the focal point of your outfit. Wear a simple bodysuit with a bold skirt or high-waisted pair of pants; wear leggings with a dress or longer sweater; or combine your simple leg-warmers with a vibrant pair of shoes and you will have mastered the art of '80s exercise and dance gear. Here are some examples:

4.Oversized and off-the-shoulder tops

Many of the '80s oversized tops might as well be labelled 'dual purpose clothing' since they were not only worn, but big enough to double as tent-shelters. You too can make use of the roomy nature of oversized clothes by knowing how to keep them from looking sloppy. The best way to do this is by juxtaposing a piece of oversized clothes with a body-hugging garment. Pair a great set of skinny-jeans with a bright off-the shoulder baggy sweater and you still look pulled together. Or thrown on just an oversized sweater and wear it like a mini-dress with simple heels or flats. Take a look:

Pictured here are ASOS Oversized Pocket Front Knitted Jumper  and Shopbop's Cashmere Sweater with Oversized Cowl Neck.

5.Mini-skirts

Not all good things come in small packages; some things are just better when they're bigger-or longer. This is a gentle reminder that some mini-skirts are just too short. If you can't even straight-backed squat to pick up a dropped item then don't wear it, or make sure you wear it with leggings.  If you do decide to test to power of the mini-skirt, keep it luxurious and classy. Don a leather, suede, cashmere or even sequined mini-skirt and wear it with a more demure top, this way you get to be both sexy and tasteful. Here are a couple of outfits to illustrate:

With a few upgrades, even the '80s can make a stylish comeback, so go ahead and have fun incorporating these past trends into your current wardrobe.
